Workshops

2009-2010 Workshop Schedule

Volunteer Essentials: Mandatory for all Potential Volunteers

Participants will learn essential tutoring strategies that will prepare them to work effectively with students.

Inspiring Young Readers and Empowering Writers and Spellers

In these two interactive workshops, Torri Chappell, teacher and reading specialist, will share techniques for helping students become more effective readers, writers and spellers. In each workshop, participants will learn about the learning processes used and identify effective strategies to help students become independent and confident learners. You will leave these workshops with book recommendations and a lot of valuable information, activities and inspiration. The workshops can be taken in any order, however, we recommend taking the Inspiring Young Readers Workshop first.

Tutoring Beginning Math (K-2) and Mastering Multiplication (3-5)

In these workshops you will experience and discuss the importance of teaching a concept in a concrete way before moving on to the abstract. Participants will become acquainted with many math tools through hands-on activities. Torri Chappell will demonstrate how games and activities can effectively teach concepts and reinforce math facts for grades K-5. You will leave these workshops with new “tricks and tips” to make your tutoring more effective and more fun. Presenting is Torri Chappell, MCSV’s Training Manager and an experienced elementary level teacher and tutor.

Working with English Language Learners

This workshop will provide you with insights and techniques to work more effectively with English Language Learners. Participants will gain an understanding of what to be mindful of while working with these learners and what academic adaptions can be used to enhance learning for children who do not speak English as their first language.

Social-Emotional Learning in the Classroom

Stefan Dasho, MA, will lead this workshop which will focus on ways that volunteers can use strategies to respond to children’s basic emotional needs and infuse social emotional intelligence into their work. Bring your questions about specific situations with your students that you would like to discuss. Stefan is a social psychologist whose focus for the past 30 years has been children’s social development in schools.

Making Tools for Learning (scheduled by request)

Come join Torri Chappell and other tutors as they make games and other learning tools to support and enhance the tutoring experience. You may want to ask your teacher if he/she has any specific needs, otherwise, just come and Torri will have plenty of suggestions and ideas. Basic materials are provided.
